We're Off To See The Wizard...

I can't ever pass up the chance to have a theme for Halloweeen, and this year we are doing "The Wizard of Oz".

Here's the backstory... It was the first real book I read on my own. I remember being in second grade when my mom gave me an old copy of the book, and I was determined to read it, so I secretly stayed up way past my bedtime with a flashlight to finish it. It was such a memorable experience to finish what I considered to be a huge long book by myself, and I can honestly say my love of reading stems from that one experience. A year or two after that, my ballet class was invited to be a part of a huge professional production of the Wizard of Oz, and that was also pretty memorable. Just to give you an idea of how big it was, I was just a lowly poppy-- my classmates and I danced around Dorothy to make her fall asleep-- but I felt pretty special to be a part of it. So as you can see, I've always had a special place in my heart for the Wizard of Oz.

But when I got the idea to do this, my kids had no idea what the Wizard of Oz was. So I went and bought the novel and we read it every night for a couple of weeks. They loved it. And how timely was it that it just came out on DVD to commemorate the movie's 70th anniversary? So of course we watched the movie, too. So here are some pictures of the kids in their costumes. It was cold and drizzly this morning (this is what happens when you don't make the Dorothy costume until the day before Halloween), so they're not the best pictures, but I think they look pretty darn cute.

And don't those leaves almost look like the Yellow Brick Road?

Happy Halloween!
